In a community hall in Haar near Munich, people have been meeting on selected weekends for years to learn an unusual craft: contact with the spirit world – step by step, over years, with a final examination. The mediumship training of Paul Meek, known among its graduates as the "Mediale Highschool", is probably the most influential mediumship school in the German-speaking world: his address list names more than a hundred mediums trained by Meek in seven countries.
The teacher
Paul Meek is one of the best-known British mediums in the German-speaking world; for more than four decades he has worked to "bring people closer to the reality of the spirit world" – a wide audience knows him from his television appearances, which we trace in our portrait of Paul Meek. What his own website declares today is remarkable: because of his prominence, Meek no longer gives private sittings at all. Anyone seeking a personal spirit contact is expressly referred to the mediums he has trained – the school is thus not a side project but the core of his legacy.
The school
The structure follows the pattern of a genuine professional training. Newcomers begin with a starter seminar ("Discover your mediumship"); then comes the multi-year block programme: weekend blocks spread across the year, supplemented by intensive seminars and an intensive week in the Bavarian Forest. Teaching takes place in Haar near Munich; the intensive week is held in Lam. The costs are in the range of a solid further education – a year's block currently runs to about €1,360, the starter seminar to €340 – and the graduates' CVs in our directory show how long the path really is: Carolin Grulke names three years, Karin Jacoby-Schlüßlhuber four, Resi Burggraf eight. At the end stand a final examination, a certificate and a traditional blessing.
What is taught
The curriculum follows British Spiritualism, in whose tradition Meek was trained: first the training and consolidation of the psychic senses – clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience –, then conscious, secure contact with the spirit world with the help of one's own spirit guide, and finally the respectful handling of messages: interpreting them correctly, delivering them responsibly. The British distinction between the "psychic level" (perception in this world) and the "spirit level" (contact with the spirit world) is an explicit part of the training – the same methodical separation taught at the Arthur Findlay College. Alongside Meek teaches Simon Veigel, whom many graduates name in their CVs as their second teacher; in earlier years Petra Plößer also belonged to the teaching staff.
The graduates
What sets this school apart from many weekend courses shows after graduation: Meek maintains a public address list of the mediums he has trained on his website – more than a hundred entries in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Hungary and on Fuerteventura. Context
There is no state regulation of mediumship in the German-speaking world – which gives all the more weight to private training paths that run over years, take place in person and end with an examination. Meek's school is the defining example: a kind of Bavarian counterpart to the college training at Stansted, with a considerably lower threshold but the same claim that mediumship must be learned, practised and tested before it is offered to the bereaved.
