Mediumship is nowhere state-regulated – anyone can call themselves a "tested medium". That makes independent evaluating bodies all the more important. This overview gathers serious organisations that test or accredit mediums, grouped by two approaches. None of them is scientific proof, but all are solid quality signals beyond mere self-description. All links lead to external providers.
Tested Ability (Evaluation Under Controlled Conditions)
Bodies that test mediumistic accuracy itself – usually blinded, with unknown sitters and a scoring system. The most meaningful quality signal, because it measures the hit rate and makes cold reading harder.
🇺🇸Forever Family Foundation· foreverfamilyfoundation.org
US foundation that evaluates mediums through a blinded, science-oriented procedure: several sitters unknown to the medium, controlled selection and a composite scoring system aim to rule out cold reading and fraud. Testing is conducted online via webcam and is free of charge – buying one's way onto the list is explicitly impossible. Requirements are a minimum three-month membership and, once certified, voluntary commitment to the foundation's work. One of the more credible quality signals in the mediumship field – though run by an organisation committed to the survival hypothesis and not peer-reviewed. For mediums who want to get certified: our guide to FFF certification (process, requirements, application). Scientific background on our research page.
🇺🇸Windbridge Research Center· windbridge.org
Probably the most rigorous selection procedure in the field: the research center founded by Dr Julie Beischel screens mediums in an eight-step process – written questionnaire, psychological tests, several interviews, two blinded phone readings, plus training in research methodology, research ethics and grief support. Those who pass become "Windbridge Certified Research Mediums" and take part in peer-reviewed, multiply-blinded studies. This is explicitly not a referral directory but research; with around twenty certified mediums the program is now closed. More in our blog post on Beischel & Windbridge.
🇺🇸Helping Parents Heal· findacertifiedmedium.com
US non-profit supporting bereaved parents which – methodologically close to the FFF approach – runs a free certification process. Listed mediums must first pass a series of mediumship experiments to a satisfactory standard; buying one's way onto the list is not possible. The public directory is at findacertifiedmedium.com. A credible quality signal from the serious, research-adjacent world of grief support – though, as with the FFF, run by an organisation sympathetic to the survival hypothesis and not peer-reviewed.
🇺🇸Bob Olson· bestpsychicmediums.com
Not an organisation but a single independent reviewer: Bob Olson, a former private investigator and sceptic, has anonymously and personally tested mediums and psychics since 1999 and maintains a "Tested as Legitimate" list. The rating cannot be bought – it confirms that someone demonstrated genuine ability under Olson's multi-step vetting. A well-known, credible trust signal in the English-speaking world. Note: it is one individual's assessment (not blinded-scientific), and his directory also carries paid advertising listings – only the "Tested" rating is what counts.
Practitioner Accreditation (Live Demonstration)
Above all the tradition-steeped British bodies: what is assessed is demonstrated, evidential mediumship before experienced examiners. A reputable professional recognition – but not a blinded scientific test.
🇬🇧Spiritualists' National Union· snu.org.uk
Britain's largest spiritualist umbrella body has awarded recognised mediumship qualifications for over a century: the Certificate (CSNU) and the Diploma (DSNU). Assessment is based on practically demonstrated, evidential mediumship – for example two separate, evidential communications to two different recipients within 15 minutes. Training and examination run through the SNU's structures and the renowned Arthur Findlay College. Unlike Windbridge or the FFF this is not a blinded scientific test but an established, reputable practitioner and training accreditation. More in our overview of UK certifications.
🇬🇧Institute of Spiritualist Mediums· ism.org.uk
British organisation dedicated to advancing and safeguarding the quality of mediumship through education. It awards its own accreditation: at assessment meetings (several times a year, usually in March, June and September) mediums demonstrate their evidential work before experienced assessors. As with the SNU, this is an established practitioner accreditation via a live demonstration, not a blinded scientific test – but a recognised mark of quality within UK spiritualism. 🇬🇧Spiritualist Association of Great Britain· sagb.org.uk
One of Britain's oldest and most respected spiritualist institutions (founded 1872 in London). The SAGB tests and maintains "approved mediums" who work for the organisation: mediums must demonstrate their evidential work to the association's standards before being accepted. Like the SNU and ISM, an established practitioner accreditation via live demonstration – not blinded-scientific, but long-established and highly regarded within UK spiritualism.
