Survival Rather Than Super-Psi: Tressoldi 2021

In the scientific study of mediumship, a classic and philosophically crucial dilemma persists: when a medium provides verifiable facts about a deceased person under strict blind protocols, where does that information originate? Are mediums reading telepathically from the minds of living sitters ("Super-Psi" or telepathy hypothesis), or are they establishing contact with the surviving consciousness of the deceased ("Survival" hypothesis)? In his 2021 study, Italian consciousness researcher Patrizio Tressoldi put this central question to an empirical test.

The Dilemma: Super-Psi vs. Genuine Survival

Many prominent researchers – such as Dr Julie Beischel of the Windbridge Research Center – cautiously adopt the neutral term "Anomalous Information Reception" (AIR). By doing so, they restrict their claims to demonstrating that information is received anomalously while explicitly leaving the question of life after death open.

In his 2021 paper "Mediumship accuracy: A quantitative and qualitative study with a triple-blind protocol", Patrizio Tressoldi took a decisive step further, asking whether the *nature* and *quality* of correct statements could indicate which hypothesis better accounts for empirical data.

The 2021 Study Protocol

The study was conducted with rigorous methodological controls:

  • 9 certified mediums performed **38 individual readings** for 38 deceased individuals.
  • The medium was provided solely with the **first name of the deceased** prior to the session.
  • A **triple-blind protocol** was maintained: mediums, sitters, and evaluators had no direct contact during readings or initial data coding.

Qualitative Analysis: Sitter Thoughts vs. Deceased Biography

Beside quantitative scoring, Tressoldi conducted a comprehensive **qualitative content analysis**. The logic behind this approach was clear:

  • If the Telepathy/Super-Psi hypothesis holds: The medium should primarily retrieve information active or emotionally charged in the mind or subconscious of the living sitter during the session.
  • If the Survival hypothesis holds: The statements should exhibit high specificity toward objective biographical facts, traits, and life events of the *deceased* person – regardless of whether the sitter was actively contemplating those details during the reading.

The qualitative breakdown yielded a striking finding: statements were precisely targeted toward specific biographical facts, hobbies, causes of death, and character traits of the deceased, rather than reflecting the immediate emotional state or thoughts of the sitters.

Tressoldi’s Conclusion: A Bold Case for "Survival"

Based on these qualitative findings, Tressoldi arrived at a bold conclusion within the academic field:

"The empirical data support the survival hypothesis (the continuation of consciousness) more strongly than a pure Super-Psi or telepathy hypothesis."

While Beischel and other researchers maintain the survival question as scientifically open, Tressoldi argues that the specificity of statements regarding the deceased compels science to consider consciousness survival as a serious, data-driven working hypothesis.

Significance for Modern Mediumship Research

This 2021 study provided the methodological groundwork for Tressoldi's subsequent 2022 OMEGA Study. It demonstrates that parapsychological research need not stop at asking *whether* mediums obtain unusual information, but can actively investigate *the nature of the information source*.
