A less well-known side of her work Birgit Fischer made public in recent years in an extensive podcast interview: her activity as a remote viewer for the international, US-based Find Me Group. She described there that the Find Me Group still works today on missing-person cases on behalf of US agencies, including the CIA – a civilian continuation of the work that earlier officially ran in the CIA Stargate program (1972–1995). Background: The US Stargate program was not a parascientific dalliance but a research project funded for over two decades by the Pentagon and the CIA. The official statistical evaluation on behalf of the CIA was carried out in 1995 by the US statistician Jessica Utts (then at UC Davis, later UC Irvine; in 2016 President of the American Statistical Association) and the skeptic Ray Hyman. Utts' finding: the hit rate of the remote viewers had been statistically significantly above chance level for two decades. "Using the standards applied to any other area of science, it is concluded that psychic functioning has been well established." Hyman disagreed in the interpretation but accepted that the statistical effect was real and not explicable by methodological flaws. On which physical mechanism this hit rate rests is still open today – the data themselves are not.
