A trance medium is someone who enters an altered state of consciousness in order to receive and pass on messages from the spirit world. Unlike mental mediums, who perceive while fully awake, a trance medium steps partially or fully aside, allowing a spirit guide, a deceased person, or a higher intelligence to speak, write or act through them. Heaven Connect explains in this article how trance mediumship works, how to recognise a reputable trance medium and what a typical session looks like.
Definition: What is a Trance Medium?
Trance mediumship is a form of mediumship in which the medium's conscious mind withdraws to make space for spirit guidance, a deceased person, or a higher intelligence. The medium becomes a channel – voice, speech, facial expression and sometimes even posture change while the message is being delivered. After the session, many trance mediums only have fragmented or no memory of what was said.
Difference: Trance Medium, Mental Medium and Channeling
The terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different ways of working:
- Mental medium – uses clair-senses (clairaudience, clairvoyance, clairsentience) to make contact and describes what is perceived in their own words. The medium stays fully conscious.
- Trance medium – steps partially or fully aside. Spirit speaks through the medium. Voice and expression can change noticeably.
- Channeling – often used as an umbrella term. In a narrow sense it means consciously transmitting information from a spiritual source (teachers, angels, ascended masters), usually in light trance.
How does trance work?
Trance is neither sleep nor unconsciousness; it is a state between waking and deep relaxation, comparable to deep meditation. Physiologically, the brain shifts into slower wave patterns (alpha to theta range). In this state the analytical mind quiets down and subtle perceptions come to the foreground.
Light trance
The medium stays conscious, perceives the environment and can react independently. The connection to the spirit world feels like an "overshadowing": thoughts, images and words arrive without being actively searched for. This is the most common form today – it is stable, controllable and well suited for sessions with clients.
Deep trance
Here the medium steps further back. Voice, breath and posture can change markedly. Deep trance requires a lot of practice, grounding and usually a second person to hold the space (the "sitter"). Classic physical trance séances of the 19th and 20th century (direct voice, materialisation) fall into this category.
What happens during a trance session?
- Preparation. The medium prepares through meditation, grounds themselves, enters their protection and consciously opens to the connection.
- Entering trance. Breathing deepens, the medium becomes quieter. Usually this takes a few minutes.
- Overshadowing / connection. Spirit makes contact. In mental trance, words and images flow; in deeper trance the medium speaks "as another person".
- Messages. You receive information, guidance or contact with a specific deceased person. Questions are usually possible.
- Return. The medium releases the connection, grounds again and returns to everyday consciousness. A short closing conversation rounds off the session.
What can you expect from a trance medium?
Trance mediums often work with spiritual guidance, life questions, healing energies or contact with the deceased. Messages are often rich in images and sometimes surprisingly specific, with names or details. A responsible medium does not make predictions that put you under pressure and does not replace medical, psychotherapeutic or legal advice.
How do you recognise a reputable trance medium?
- A clear description of how they work, without exaggerated promises.
- Respect for your autonomy – no dependency dynamics, no "you must" messages.
- Transparent pricing and a predictable session structure.
- Training or long-term practice (for example at Arthur Findlay College, SNU, or established Swiss/German circles).
- Clear separation between mediumship and diagnostics (health, finances, legal matters).
Who is a trance session suitable for?
A trance session can be helpful when you are looking for orientation on life questions, want to connect with a deceased loved one, or hope to receive spiritual impulses for your path. In acute crises, mental health distress or extreme grief, medical and psychotherapeutic professionals should be your first point of contact – mediumship is a complement, not a substitute.
